Temperature sensor ICs take full advantage of the linearity and predictable temperature characteristics of silicon PN junctions. Since these ICs are active circuits made using conventional semiconductor processes, they can be provided in various form factors. They have many features, such as digital interfaces, ADC inputs, fan control, etc., that other technologies cannot provide. The operating temperature range of temperature sensor ICs can be as low as -55°C and as high as +125°C, and the upper temperature limit of some products can reach around +150°C. Common temperature sensor ICs are introduced below.
Analog temperature sensor
Analog temperature sensor ICs convert temperature into voltage and in some cases into current. The simplest voltage output analog temperature sensor has only three active terminals: ground, power input and signal output. Other analog sensors with enhanced functionality provide more inputs or outputs, such as comparators or voltage reference outputs. Analog temperature sensors exploit the temperature characteristics of bipolar transistors to produce an output voltage proportional to temperature. Amplifying this voltage signal and applying a certain bias can establish an appropriate change relationship between the sensor output voltage and the die temperature, and obtain higher temperature measurement accuracy. For example, the DS600, the industry's most accurate analog temperature sensor, guarantees an error of less than ±0.5°C within the temperature range of -20°C to +100°C.
Local digital temperature sensor
Integrating an analog temperature sensor with an ADC can form a temperature sensor that directly outputs a digital signal. Such devices are often called digital temperature sensors or local digital temperature sensors. "Local" means that the sensor is measuring its own temperature. This mode of operation contrasts with remote sensors, which measure the temperature of an external IC or discrete transistor. Basic digital temperature sensors simply measure temperature, and the temperature data is read through a variety of specific interfaces, including: SPI/3-wire, I2C, 1-Wire, and PWM. Complex digital sensors have more functions, such as: high/low temperature alarm output, setting trigger threshold
registers and EEPROM, etc. Maxim offers a variety of local digital temperature sensors, including the DS7505 and DS18B20, which guarantee ±0.5°C accuracy over a wide temperature range.
Remote digital temperature sensor
Remote digital temperature sensors are also called remote sensors or diode temperature sensors. The remote sensor is used to measure the temperature of an external transistor, which can be a discrete transistor or a transistor integrated inside another IC. Microprocessors, field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), and ASICs often contain one or more temperature sensors, often called temperature diodes, which have an important advantage over remote temperature sensors: they can monitor temperatures at multiple points with a single IC.
